Nine days till the derby and fishing is still a little slow. I am not worried at all because that means the bite will be on for opening day of the 2016 Peter Cameron Morrison Memorial Derby!
Here are the lakes for this year’s derby:
Hook Lake, Kump Lake, Thalia Lake, Goose Lake, Rickey Lake, Clifford Lake, and Lodwick Lake.
All of these lakes are off the Pike Mountain Forest Service Road with the exception of Hook Lake. Most have good boat launch access with the exception of Hook which can be dicey unless you are able to carry your small launch to the water.
The winning fish caught by Ken Woodward last year did come out of Hook Lake though, which might change your mind. If you are looking for maps of the area, they can be found through the Backroads Mapbooks app or books.
This PDF map shows an overview of the general Pike Mountain area lakes:

The Countdown is On!
Only seventeen more days till the start of the 2nd Annual PCM Derby! I ordered the derby t-shirts today.
Thanks to Jon Alexander from Interior Ink Works for once again tackling this huge job for us. I have to say, the shirts this year are excellent! Carolyn from Sprokit Media really did a great job on the graphics and I think they are going to be popular.
There are only a handful of spots left so if you were thinking you would just show up Friday night or Saturday morning and sign up…you may want to rethink that. Signing up in advance is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I cannot guarantee there will be space available on derby day. Remember, only participants of the derby are eligible to win the Lowe 1040 Jon Boat. You must be present and fishing to win.
Call Jamie to secure your spot before it’s too late. 604-807-3005

I had a wonderful conversation today with Mike Gass the manager of sportfishing development at the Freshwater Fisheries Society.
The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC) is a private non-profit organization dedicated to the enhancement and conservation of BC’s freshwater fish resources for the benefit of the public. The Society delivers the provincial fish stocking program to support sport fishing, offers a range of conservation services to protect wild fish, and promotes the importance of sport fishing and fish conservation to the public.
Each year, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (FFSBC) stocks about 800 lakes and streams throughout BC. The Society also conducts research and development activities as well as promotion and marketing initiatives aimed at improving sport fishing in the province.
The funds raised at last year’s derby went right into the Learn to Ice Fish programs that were delivered to over 600 youth and their families. This is what the derby is all about, happy, healthy lifestyle that gets kids outside and involved in nature and the environment.
Read about the contribution to Freshwater Fisheries:
FFSBC Thank You Letter to PCM Memorial Derby
Your participation last year sent kids to camp where they could l
earn to manage their diabetes as well as brought the youth of BC to the sport of fishing we all love. By teaching kids to learn to appreciate nature we ensure that our province and its waters stay clean and beautiful for future generations. From all of the organizers here at the PCM Memorial Derby, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, and the Canadian Diabetes Association – THANK YOU!
Lets make this year even better! Call Jamie to register your spot! 604-807-3005
The bigger the team the more prizes, raffle, and auction items there are up for grabs! Nick and Savas from Trout Waters were there for us last year and they’re back again this year. Although, they’re claiming they are going to be too busy to attend. Ummmm…guys? That’s what employees are for. Make them work so you can come fishin’!
We are incredibly thankful for your continues support and I know the derby participants will be too.
Who can say they have hand tied flies from Rob Texmo? Well if you don’t then you need to come to the derby and enter to win a chance at a box full of them. I know several anglers that love his flies and swear they’re magic.
The list of items up for grabs this year is truly incredible and would not be possible without our sponsors. This is an event you are not going to want to miss.
Where will you be this May long weekend?
Another corporate donor! You may recognize the name. Right now they are also sponsoring the women’s national curling team. Yup that’s right, we have the same sponsor as those talented ladies of the lanes. Qualico Developments is one of the largest fully integrated, privately owned real estate companies in Western Canada. Each year, more than 3,000 Canadian families choose Qualico as their homebuilder. They have offices in Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Austin, Texas. Their activities span the entire real estate spectrum, including:
Single-family and multi-family home building
Residential land acquisition and development
Commercial and industrial development
Building supply and manufacturing
With their generous contribution there are sure to be some incredible prizes up for grabs. Make sure you have your entry form in so you can have your shot!
Derby entry forms are available to download either through the menu or clicking HERE
If you’re totally confused, have no fear. Feel free to call Jamie Parsons the event coordinator and she’ll walk you through it. Her number is 604-807-3005.
Cash, credit card, or personal cheques will be accepted for advance registration. Cash and credit cards are accepted for last minute entries on May 20th and 21st. Advance registration is advised as we are only allowing 60 entries this year.
This year’s derby is going to be incredible! We have a record number of people, groups, and businesses donating to help us raise money for some great charities!
Black’s Flies is once again sending us some fly boxes filled with their quality tied flies.
Anyone who attended last year will remember the fantastic selection they provided for all types of fishing.
New to our team this year is Core Mechanical! Jim and Ryan’s very generous donation will enable us to acquire … well we have HUGE plans and want to keep some things as a surprise. Suffice it to say, you WILL want to attend this year. A bigger and better derby demands bigger and better prizes!
What could we be planning, you ask? Well, you’ll just have to come and find out. We may be giving out a hint or two before the derby. You’ll have to stay tuned to find out.
Redington has been confirmed as a 2016 Derby sponsor! We’re excited to announce they are donating a Butter Stick this year. The Butter Stick is built from high modulus fiberglass, premium components, and they gave it retro styling. The Butter Stick has enough flex to deliver delicate presentations, but all the strength to reach fish on the far bank.
Have you got your entry in yet? Ya don’t get ’em if ya don’t go.
